The Woman Who Fell in Love with a Mermaid
This flash fiction story by Amanda Rodriguez was published in 2014 by Germ Magazine. Written in the style of a fable, it is a queer re-imagining of classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid. In this story, Rodriguez touches on themes of beauty, culture, body positivity, power dynamics, and relationship toxicity. Ultimately, though, this is a story about choice; Both choosing between fantasy and reality and choosing what home looks like.
Germ Magazine is for ages high school and beyond that celebrates beginnings, futures, and all the amazing and agonizing moments in between.

There once was a woman who lived by the sea. She made decorative armor out of scavenged fish hooks for the mer-people who lived beneath the water. One day while trading an intricately-wrought chainmail piece, she fell in love with the princess of the mer-people, the daughter of a great king, and a mermaid.”
